The ability to inspire college students with a love of learning, develop critical thinking skills, and a sense of responsibility to the society in which they live has been life long goal of my teaching career. I am continually in pursuit of effective active learning strategies that can create these meaningful changes over the course of a semester.

I have over a decade of experience teaching at the college level, whether it be at the teaching assistant level or as the instructor. The courses that I have taught revolve around psychology, sociology, human development, and family studies. I am particularly interested in the area close relationships and loneliness among adolescents and young adults and relish the opportunity to teach courses that cover these topics.

I am also interested in how technology can be used to assist in creating these meaningful changes in students’ learning experiences. Without a doubt, I believe that Web 2.0 technologies are essential tools that can be used to foster students’ curiosity, critical thinking skills, and a sense of community engagement. Though challenging, I am constantly trying to understand how various technologies can be used within the classroom setting (such as clickers and backchanneling) and outside of the classroom (LMS, webquests, etc.).

My research interest has focused on loneliness, particularly among adolescents and young adults. I have developed a loneliness intervention program for college students. Currently I am working on developing a loneliness scale that will be able to determine characteristics of individuals that might contribute to their chronic loneliness. My eventual goal is to have a marketable loneliness program that can be used in a variety of different settings. I also do some outreach work through my Web of Loneliness website (http://www.webofloneliness.com)
